Stop Reading the Story and Start Telling It, With Jon Grilz

"People aren't just going to find you if you stop making content. That's not how it works."

Jon Grilz has been making horror audio drama since 2015, when he launched Small Town Horror and later Creepy - a show that now has close to 3,000 episodes across its free and Patreon feeds. In this conversation, we talk about the long road from data-entry jobs and creative burnout to podcasting full-time, including the moment he was days away from quitting altogether.

We also get into the craft: why the telling of a story matters as much as the story itself, what a single-line delivery from a No Sleep narrator taught him about the power of audio, and the simple piece of advice that changed how he thinks about narration.

About the Podcast

Audio Indies
Your podcast should never need to be watched to make sense.
The one rule of Audio Indies is that your podcast should never need to be watched to make sense. Whether you're audio-only or you publish video, too, this is the show for podcasters who put the listening experience first. After all, your fans have much more time in the day to listen than they do to watch, and the real connection happens when you offer to accompany them, rather than demand they make time for you. On the show, we cover everything from the craft of spoken-word audio and storytelling to the value of open podcasting, audience ownership, and monetisation models built for independent creators with dedicated niche audiences.
